It’s not easy to make a serious topic like cancer fun or light, but director Ruth Meehan looks like she did a great job in this new film inspired by Anne Gildea’s bestselling memoir I ‘ ve Got Cancer, What’s Your Excuse? Meehan’s sister Alacoque passed away from cancer and this’ dramatic comedy ‘about the healing power of love, laughter and friendship is dedicated to’ Alacoque + Mago and women warriors around the world “.
THE BRIGHT SIDE arrives in Irish theaters on August 20 and sees Gemma-Leah Devereux play the world-weary stand-up comedian Kate McLaughlin. We find her character in a dark place – she wants to come out, but her morbid prayers are answered in the form of a cancer diagnosis. To appease her family, she reluctantly agrees to undergo chemotherapy. Armed with staggering cynicism and a plethora of dark, comedic jokes, Kate gets off to a bad start with four other women she meets in the chemo ward; four women from all Irish backgrounds, whose unsolicited friendships are perfectly designed to make her closed heart explode.
