Ireland is home to some impressively talented sports stars. Today we take a look at four who are at the top of their game.

When it comes to Irish sports stars, there are a few names that come to mind. Of course, we know all about the stars of yesteryear Brian O’Driscoll, Roy Keane and Christy Ring, but what about the current crop of players?

Read on to find out who is waving the highest tricolor for Ireland in elite sport right now.

4. Conor McGregor – one of Ireland’s most famous sports stars

Conor McGregor is one of Ireland's best-known sports stars.

32-year-old mixed martial artist Conor McGregor of Crumlin, Dublin is arguably one of Ireland’s most famous sports stars today.

The UFC star who only started fighting at the age of 12 and trained as an apprentice plumber in his early 20s made his UFC debut in 2013, eliminating Marcus Brimage.

Since then infamy and fame have gone hand in hand for the Irish fighter, with fireworks expected ahead of his July 10 clash against Dustin Poirier.

If you want to support Notorious to knock Poirier out, take a look at this list of the best. Irish bookmakers voted by the OLBG community.

Beyond Conor McGregor, however, who are Ireland’s most famous sports stars still at the top of their game?

Matt Doherty is a talented footballer.

It’s a fallow period for the national football team, with current manager Stephen Kenny coming under heavy criticism after leading his team to just one win in 13 games, including an infamous loss to the European minnows. from Luxembourg.

Kenny’s tactics and credentials for the Irish manager role can be questionable. However, it is fair to say that he has the weakest talent pool of any Irish manager in the past 20 years.

One player who stands out among his fellow internationals is Tottenham Hotspur flying winger Matt Doherty.

The 29-year-old started his career with Swords Celtic and Home Farm before crossing the water in 2010 to join former Irish manager Mick McCarthy at Wolves.

In a decade at the Midlands club, Doherty racked up 260 appearances, scoring 20 goals as his club moved from Premier League to League One, before returning to fashion in style under Portuguese coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

Doherty was a key player for the Wolves as they beaten to the title of champion in 2018, then qualified for Europe during the 2018-2019 Premier League campaign.

His performances at Wolves sparked the interest of legendary coach Jose Mourinho, who brought him to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last summer.

Like his teammates, Doherty struggled for form last season, but he showed in a few flashes why he is considered the most talented player in the current Irish squad. Thus, he is definitely one of the stars of Irish sport currently at the top of his game.

2. Brian Fenton – a Dublin legend

If this article were to discuss the potential, David Clifford’s name would currently be in place of Brian Fenton’s. The 22-year-old forward from Kerry has the talent and the mentality to coach his county in at least two All-Ireland’s in the years to come.

Even if he does, he will still be a long way from matching Dublin’s Brian Fenton trophy record. The midfielder was a late bloomer, taking some time to adjust to the pace and ferocity of high-level play.

After winning his first All-Ireland in 2015, Fenton has become a full member of this phenomenal Dublin team. His distribution in this stellar midfielder has been flawless over the past five years, and his roster has also helped strengthen his side’s cause.

At just 27 years old, Fenton has a few more years in the tank to add to his already bulging trophy cabinet and solidify his status as one of Ireland’s top sports stars.

1. Johnny Sexton – one of the biggest stars of Irish sport

Johnny Sexton is a talented Irish rugby player.

Johnny Sexton is, without a doubt, one of the greatest of all time to have represented Ireland at the international level. The 35-year-old has won three Six Nations Championships with Ireland, represented the British and Irish Lions on two tours and won the title of World Rugby Player of the Year in 2018.

In Ireland’s recent Six Nations victory, Sexton was once again a key figure tournament leader in points scored – 15 more than the second Owen Farrell. However, it’s not just natural talent that makes Sexton one of the best in the world; it is also his tactical spirit.

Able to execute the most elaborate tactical instructions and relay those instructions to his teammates, Sexton is truly an indispensable player for head coach Andy Farrell.

While at 35, most players would sign up for training courses for their post-player careers, Sexton appears to be improving. If his body withstands the rigors of top-level rugby, we could see even more Leinster Man fireworks in the years to come.

Notable mentions – more top Irish sports stars

Conor Murray is one of the best stars in Irish sports.

Die-hard rugby fans might read this article and wonder why there is no mention of iron-willed Conor Murray or the incredibly talented Jacob Stockdale.

Football fans might be wondering why Matt Doherty was included before, uh… Adam Idah? Okay, that might have been the easiest choice of all!

Opponents might also wonder why Eoin Morgan, the 34-year-old Dubliner who leads England to the 2019 Cricket World Cup, has been omitted.

Sadly, however, there wasn’t room for everyone on this list, but if you think we’ve made a glaring omission, be sure to let us know in the comments section below.
