Three Irish food companies received shutdown orders in June

Three food businesses in Ireland received shutdown orders for food safety violations during June, according to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI).

The companies concerned were located in Dublin, Limerick and Tipperary.

Food businesses have been ordered to close for food safety violations, in accordance with the FSAI of 1998 and the EU (Official Food Law Control) regulations of 2020.

A closure order was served under the European Union (Official Food Law Controls) Regulation 2020 on:

  • Golden Asian Street Food and Gala Deli at Gala Shanagolden, Main Street, Shanagolden, Limerick (published 06/01/2021 and closed 06/04/2021).

Two closure orders were served under the FSAI Act of 1998:

  • DFC Take-Away, 82B Dorset Street Lower, Dublin 1 (issued 06/18/2021 and lifted 07/01/2021).
  • Saffron Indian Cuisine, Wesley Square, Main Street, Cashel, Tipperary (published 6/10/2021 and closed 6/11/2021).

Under the FSAI of 1998, a closure order is served when it is considered that there is or is likely to be a serious and immediate danger to public health in or on the premises. ; or when an improvement order is not respected. Closure orders may refer to the immediate closure of all or part of the food premises, or of all or part of its activities.

Under the 2020 EU Regulation (Official Food Law Control), closure orders and prohibition orders are served in cases of non-compliance with food law.

Among the reasons given for the closure orders were rodent droppings found at the scene, a cockroach infestation with evidence of live and dead cockroaches and insects found on a refrigerated display, while live flies were also seen. flying from an open trash can to an open container of cooked rice stored under a sink used to prepare raw meat.

Other reasons included an insufficiently clean kitchen area and accumulations of grease, food debris and living ants.

“During the month of June, food inspectors detected many serious violations of food safety legislation,” said Dr Pamela Byrne, FSAI’s chief executive.

“It is not acceptable that some food companies do not follow strict food safety practices to ensure that the food they produce and sell to their customers is safe to eat.

“This behavior demonstrates a reckless attitude towards food safety and a complete disregard for the health of their customers.”
