It’s been a long road to come back, but the Irish are back at the NCAA Tournament and Notre Dame’s senior class wants to make a run enjoying the Big Dance for the first time.

“(We) came here to Notre Dame with the intention of doing this every year, but obviously we haven’t been there yet,” senior Dane Goodwin said. “And I can’t wait to be there. I’ve waited, I’ve worked a lot. This band has been through a lot. It’s cool to see it finally come to an end. And hopefully we can do a deep run here.

While Notre Dame would have loved not to be in the First Four, Paul Atkinson Jr. isn’t disappointed and ready to give some hints Wednesday night.

“It’s another game we have to go out and win,” Atkinson said. “We don’t care how we got here, we wanted to get here any way we could. It’s like that. We want to go out and fight. It’s going to be tough, one more game, but we’re here, and we’re ready and excited.

And yes, Notre Dame is very aware of UCLA’s run to the Final Four after starting in Dayton a year ago.

“Coach offered a few examples, one being last year with UCLA and teams like Syracuse and VCU over the last 10 or so years taking full advantage of the top four and being able to win a game, gain momentum and possibly wear throughout the tournament,” Goodwin explained. “So I think we’re looking to do the same.”

If the Fighting Irish are to advance, Notre Dame will need to find a way to slow down Ron Harper Jr., who was recently named an AP Honorable Mention All-American.

“It’s a great story,” Mike Brey said. “I remember a bit of him on the tour and it was typical of what Steve did and we did it in a similar way. Maybe the guys who aren’t recruited at a very high level , you integrate them into your program and improve them.

“And its core is that. And Ron is the epitome of that. I think he got into great shape. He got into great shape. But there is the sense of play, good size. And he won it all. He had to come grind to get there.

On the offensive end, Notre Dame freshman Blake Wesley has taken the ACC by storm, but you’d never know it from draft Sunday. There was little emotion from the South Bend native and it could be a telltale sign as he isn’t satisfied with just playing in the NCAA Tournament as he looks to bounce back from Thursday’s loss to Virginia Tech. .

“He’s the hardest on himself,” Brey said. “So I want him to bounce back and smile and not feel like he’s got the weight of the world. He doesn’t feel like he has to carry us. Those old people have really helped him.

Today is also Wesley’s 19th birthday and for someone who loves bright lights, the freshman will have the stage to put on a show.
