Shawn Stiffler is about to complete his first team as Notre Dame baseball head coach.
D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers announced that Notre Dame is expected to hire VCU pitching coach Seth Cutler-Voltz and Old Dominion’s Logan Robbins as their final assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
ISD sources said the same as both coaches are going through the final stages of the hiring process.
Cutler-Voltz is a household name for Notre Dame players and fans should be thrilled as he comes to South Bend to replace longtime pitching coach Chuck Ristano, who left for Tallahassee.
VCU hired Cutler-Voltz in November 2021, and the Rams’ pitchers found immediate success. VCU’s pitching staff recorded a 3.91 ERA (#9 in the nation), which was exactly the same as Notre Dame’s 2022 ERA. The Rams also struck out 518 while walking just 191 and holding a WHIP of 1.29.
Cutler-Voltz played four years at VCU and made 73 appearances, including 47 starts and eight full games for the Rams. He also ranks No. 2 in VCU history with 338.1 innings pitched. Cutler-Voltz had a career ERA of 4.31, 229 strikeouts and won 18 games.
After graduating, Cutler-Voltz was on staff at VCU as a volunteer assistant for two seasons before moving to UT Martin in 2015-16. UT Martin broke a program record of 369 batters in 2016. Cutler-Voltz then moved to Wofford where he spent five seasons before returning to VCU in 2021. In 2021, Wofford retired 492 batters, which was the third highest rating in the program’s history. .
Robbins has spent the past seven seasons at Old Dominion and he’s played in a variety of roles. In 2017, Robbins was promoted to assistant coach and scouting coordinator after spending two seasons as a volunteer coach.
In 2021, Old Dominion were electric on offense as the Monarchs set program records for single-game, single-season homers. Old Dominion finished second in Conference USA in 2021 with a .301 batting average and second in the nation with 105 homers.
Old Dominion followed in 2022 with another impressive season at the plate as the Monarchs finished 41-17 and hit a program-record 128 homers. The Monarchs hit an impressive 2.21 homers per game, which finished No. 2 in the nation.
Robbins began his coaching career at Kentucky Wesleyan College in 2014 after his baseball career ended. The Atlanta Braves drafted Robbins from Western Kentucky in 2011 and he spent two seasons playing professionally.
