IRISH sports stars Conor McGregor, Paul McGrath and Philly McMahon were just three of many to greet Katie Taylor after her latest victory.
Last night, she got a unanimous points decision over Delfine Persoon in a rematch to match her billing in their first fight.
Conor McGregor said: “Huge congratulations Katie Taylor !!! Put her to bed for sure, no questions!
“Top notch stuff as always from the greats in Ireland!”
Paul McGrath added: “Simply the best. Very proud Katie.”
While Dublin veteran Philly McMahon has noted how she is able to lift the spirits of the whole nation, especially given the depressing times we are living in right now.
He said: “It’s typical of Katie Taylor lifting the energy of the Irish people in such a difficult time by doing what she does best.”
Taylor got off to an extremely quick start as she was faster on the punch than Persoon throughout the first three laps.
Persoon got into the game more from there as she threw a lot, but Taylor’s class allowed her to block or dodge a lot of hits that were coming in at her.
The pair fought to the end, but Taylor had done enough to lead them to a comfortable victory.
The only downside to the evening was a Sky presenter referring to Taylor as a former member of “Team GB”, which naturally elicited an angry reaction from fans.
But overall, it was another chapter in an already glorious career for the Olympic gold medalist as she now continues to grow as a professional.
