Solidarity TD said alleged rape victims were continuously not believed in courtrooms and raised the issue in the Day today.

Speaking during questions from executives, Coppinger told Leo Varadkar: “Of the three counts relating to how complainants are treated in court, funding and education, you have failed miserably in the course of the last year.

“Is it any surprise that we have reports of famous sports celebrities strutting around with impunity, despite allegations of sexual assault.

“Should women hide every time such a figure decides to go out at night?”

String in DAIL

Coppinger raised the issue a year after waving underwear at Dail to highlight questioning of rape victims during trials.

The TD, which last year showed a thong in the Dail room as it accused a culture of blaming victims in Republic courts, said the government was not doing enough.

She said including the definition of consent in the law was not worth the paper it was printed on, as sexual assault complainants continued to be treated poorly in court cases.

“Lawyers are still spreading the same old myths about rape,” she said.

She said last month the Dublin Rape Crisis Center declared there was an epidemic of sexual violence in the country.

In response, Varadkar told Coppinger: “There is an epidemic of gender-based violence in Ireland and around the world.

“And it has to stop. And you asked me what the government is doing about it and we are doing a lot.
