Irish film star Stuart Townsend arrested in Los Angeles after argument with wife

Irish actor Stuart Townsend has been arrested after fighting with his wife and is said to face domestic violence charges.

The actor, 46, from Howth in Dublin, was reportedly physically with his wife Agatha Arya and refused to let her leave the house during the argument.

According to TMZ, neighbors have contacted the Santa Monica Police Department after hearing screams coming from the Hollywood home.

Police sources told the US site that Agatha complained of pain in her arms upon arrival but that there was nothing serious enough for her to need medical attention.

After further questioning, police discovered the heated argument was verbal between the couple until Townsend grabs his wife by the arms and refuses to let her leave their home.

The Dubliner was later arrested and convicted of a crime of domestic violence.

He has posted $ 50,000 bail to be released and a court date will be set in the coming weeks.

The father-of-two is apparently no stranger to breaking the law, he already faces two misdemeanor counts – bogus imprisonment and dissuading someone from reporting a crime.

Townsend told TMZ that although he admits he and his wife had a fight, it was all settled by the time the police arrived.

He added that they “looked forward to seeing this resolved quickly and favorably and resuming (our) quiet lives as husbands and parents.”

A spokeswoman confirmed, “The Santa Monica City District Attorney has dismissed charges against Stuart Townsend in connection with an argument he and his wife had on September 5. That ends the case.”

“Agatha and Stuart Townsend are grateful to the Santa Monica Police and the city attorney’s office for the work they do to protect the community.”

The Hollywood actor grew up in Howth, north Dublin, and began his acting career in 1993 at the Gaiety School of Acting.

He is best known for playing Lestat in Queen of the Damned or Dorian Gray in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, however, he is known to have missed a major role in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

He was chosen to play Aragorn in the hit trilogy but was dropped by Viggo Mortensen in 2002.

Speaking about the cast change at the time to Entertainment Weekly, Townsend said, “I was there to rehearse and practice for two months and then I was fired the day before filming started.

“I don’t have good feelings for these people in charge, really don’t. The director wanted me and apparently thought better because he really wanted someone 20 years older than me and completely different.

The actors’ most recent work has been on the small screen as they have played Dr. Samuel Wainwright in Salem and made appearances on Elementary and Law & Order.
